BBC and Guardian top media owner blog charts
24 August 2006 16:42

Blogs that focus on political and celeb gossip also do wellThe BBC and The Guardian play host to the most popular media owner blogs, but the online personal diaries written by individuals are by far the most popular blog-related destinations for UK surfers, according to new research. An analysis of web traffic by Hitwise reveals that nearly one in every 200 UK internet visits is now to a blog or personal website. The most visited sites are those that allow consumers to create and read personal blogs, such as Windows Live Spaces (spaces.live.com), which took a 19.72% share of overall blog visits from the UK in the week to 19 August, and MySpace Blog (blog.myspace.com), which had a 16.46% market share. The BBC (www.bbc.co.uk/blogs) and the Guardian (blogs.guardian.co.uk and commentisfree.guardian.co.uk) were the top two mainstream news blogging sites, coming 10th and 11th respectively in Hitwise's blogging and personal websites category. The most popular blogs created by individuals are Fugufish, Girl with a One-Track Mind and Guido Fawkes. Girl with a One-Track Mind author Zoe Margolis, who writes her blog under the pseudonym Abby Lee, was recently unmasked after several of her posts appeared in the Sunday Times. The media frenzy that followed - no doubt helped by the blog's erotic content - led to an eight-fold increase in visits to her blog. It had a ranking of 133 in the Hitwise Lifestyle - Blogs and Personal Websites category two weeks ago, but rocketed to 17th in the week to 19 August, when it became the second-most popular individual blog. Little Green Footballs (LGF) and EU Referendum's popularity came on the back of their criticism of doctored photographs and media coverage of the recent conflict in Lebanon. Fugufish is best known as a home for viral videos, while Guido Fawkes - otherwise known as former Tory activist Paul Staines - played a key role in breaking the John Prescott sex scandal earlier this year. Heather Hopkins, vice president of research, Hitwise UK, said: "Fugufish, Girl with a One-Track Mind and Little Green Footballs offer examples of blogs that have quickly gained a mass audience. Whilst the mainstream media can be an important catalyst for growth, links from other blogs, email and social networking sites can also drive growth. This reflects the community around blogging and a maturing of the medium that now can create its own celebrities."
